George Nelson & Associates Beehive Lamp By Lamp Comprehensive Storage System. This example is in excellent working condition with only minor signs of wear. There are two small chips of missing paint on two edges of the top shade. (see photos) Very minor paint loss on the underside knob that helps hold the plastic diffuser in place. The chain is short with only a few links and I believe is not original to the lamp (but the connectors on either end are). Ceiling cover is not available. The interior of the shade is very clean and is NOT missing any paint. The plastic tubes diffuser is in PERFECT shape and still has the clear acrylic tabs that hold it in place. A truly excellent example. Please see all photos for an exact record of condition. Feel free to ask any questions or request more photos. George Nelson & Associates/ Lucia DeRespinis. 52.1 cm x 31.8 cm. The Beehive lamp is part of Lucia DeRespiniss 1960 Leisure (Indoor-Outdoor) lighting series, created while she was a designer at George Nelson & Associates. Coated in textured black enamel, the metal pyramid hood with hexagonal base forms a distinct honeycomb shape, while acrylic cylinders further emphasize the beehive motif. Lucia DeRespinis was one of only two women among sixty-five students graduating in industrial design from Pratt University in 1952. Two years later, DeRespinis made her way to George Nelson Associates, where she was involved in several projects and rose to the position of senior designer. In 1960, the company partnered with the famed Nessen Studios, run at the time by Greta Von Nessen, to create the Leisure (Indoor-Outdoor) Lighting series, and DeRespinis was responsible for this beehive pendant lamp. The hexagonal pyramid hood in metal defines the honeycomb motif and supports a group of acrylic cylinders that diffuse their inner light. This contrasting combination of materials is in tune with functionalist propositions but is also playful in form, with the plastic resembling traditional hanging lamps fringes. While DeRespinis is still underrepresented in museums, her clock designs for George Nelson Associates were recently included in the Serious Play exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Denver Art Museum, and have been reissued by Vitra. Curiously, she is perhaps best known amongst graphic design aficionados for the immortal pink and orange Dunkin Donuts logo.
