This Layens hive features 20 conventionally spaced frames, each measuring 440 x 340 mm. The top bars are butted together, providing extra insulation and allowing for inspections without disturbing the entire hive. This specific Layens hive style is ideal for UK beekeepers and includes varroa mesh floors, pull-out inspection trays, and two entrances, making it suitable for managing more than one colony. It comes complete with 20 assembled Layens frames, two entrance reducers (one for each colony), a partition board and a hive feeder. Manufactured by Hydes Hives in the Midlands, the design is based on 19th-century French beekeeper George de Layens’ sustainable beekeeping principles, which prioritize the use of local bees and appropriate hives that require minimal management. The hive is fully assembled and has been used for only two seasons. We had to replace the original ply roof, which had separated, but the hive is still in very good condition. This hive is great for those who may not want to be very hands-on, as well as for those who use cut comb and prefer not to extract honey by spinning.
