Wonderful bee box with decorative carved tab handles on lids and dividers. Nicely shaped and chamfered latches as well. Each of those attached with a screw. A hand built Swarm Trap, built to my tried and thoroughly tested design. I have caught over 54 swarms in traps of this design over the last 11 years. I have eight traps out during the swarm season so achieve a greater than 50% hit rate! Last year was exceptional and I caught 14 swarms in eight traps not all at the same time, as I had to explain to my eight year old son!! They are made of Marine Plywood (WPB 12mm), glued and nailed together prior to three coats of Dulux WeatherShield paint. They have a removable aluminium and timber lid giving brilliant durability. They will hold 5 deep brood frames (12×14) with extra space below the frames to give the feeling of space that scout bees require to lead their swarm to your box. There is a small weather porch, a landing stage and an entrance slot that they appear to like. These combine to make these box traps really attractive and successful. The entrance hole is easily restricted by two vertically driven nails to prevent mice and birds taking up residence without restricting the opening for bees. This is more of a winter problem though so isnt usually required. At the back of the box to the top, is an all important, 2 mesh covered ventilation hole. There is a “french cleat” on the back of the box. The other half of this simple hanging device is supplied loose within the box, just waiting to be screwed to your chosen spot. It allows the trap to hang securely and vertically so that the bees build out their comb within the frames instead of cross-combing. The box does not come with deep brood frames. These are available separately. It comes with simple baiting and set up instructions and a small amount of attractant on a pair of clingfilm wrapped cotton buds. Get ready for the warm weather and swarming season. These have been a great investment over the years for me, but more importantly than that, the satisfaction of giving a wild swarm of honey bees a new, safe and productive home is immense. All you have to do is then remove the frames into a hive (National or WBC compatible) and tip the remaining bees in afterwards. These really do work, will last you many years and you’ve only got to catch one swarm and its more than paid for itself. I always have one in the back of the car just in case I get a call, and always have one next to my hives, just in case I’ve missed something and one of my colony throws an unexpected swarm.
