RARE 1800s SIGNED BEE HIVE COVERED BUTTER with UNDERPLATE CANE WARE YELLOW WARE
This beehive covered butter dish is absolutely stunning. Dating to the 1800s, this is an extremely rare yellow ware form. The visual appearance of this woven straw beehive is striking with its detailed high relief molding featuring 12 bees on the hive and 9 on the under plate. The top of the cover also has a grape vine handle with grape leaves around the dome. This unglazed yellow ware form is referred to as cane ware. This allows for the great molded detail that would not be as prominent if the surface was glazed. The beehive lid measures 4 ¼” in height to the top of the finial, 5 ¾” wide at the base, and the under plate is 8 ¼ wide. The underside of the butter dish is impressed with the potter’s mark “WS&S”. Considering its age, the beehive butter dish is in remarkable original condition with no damage or repairs. This beehive is so rare and unique that it does not appear in any of the books on yellow ware and would be prized by any advanced collector.
