As a cutting element, an adjustable wedge-shaped steel knife is used, which is attached to the main body. These beehives are made from 100% natural cedar wood without any edge joining or gluing. We bought the timber from off-cut of a palace decoration. Timber was specially sun dried for 3/4 years to get the traditional outcome. You can sense the wonderfully soft aromatic smell from distance. Our beehives have a lot of personality and the natural knots provide a more rustic look and define the visual character of each of them. Each and every hive is different. You can name them differently as well. Knots in the wood are intact, sound and tight (if there is any issue please let us know). All wood is checked prior to packaging but if you see any capillary cracks please dont worry as they wont get any bigger. Its normal with this wood. As said we did not use any glue or chemicals to fill them in. A brush of teak oil or linseed oil can solve the issue if it occurs in many parts. We are environmentally friendly people. No chemicals were used while making these beehives. These beehives are produced by local carpenters who use traditional methods as well as modern machinery (they dry cedar outside at least 3 to 4 years rather than oven drying them). Each piece is made from a single timber as we did not use machine pressing (edge joining) that involves chemicals and strong glues. Our timber was produced from sustainable forests in Southern Turkey- from the legendary Taurus Mountains (where Santa Claus comes from). You can leave these hives as it is or use linseed or teak oil to give them a fine finish. In home furniture they use these two types of oils. If you have a lot of free time you can do it for fun. Cedar is pitch free and perfectly suited to take virtually any stain, finish (or even bleaching) product, giving the beekeeper or builder myriad choices on the final look. Vintage Seth Thomas Sonora 5 Bell Chime Clock # 14 Beehive Case Runs James Armiger Baltimore MD. Here is an opportunity to own a Seth Thomas Sonora Chime Bell Clock that is in very nice condition. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself! Very unique one here. This is a 5 Bell Sonora #14 Chime Clock. The clock dates to the mid 1910s period. We can therefore better control our acquisition costs, keep commission costs low (if applicable), and finally, we don’t have the overhead that the higher end houses and galleries pass on to their clients. There is nothing like the sound of a bell versus a rod strike/chime clock. Once you have one, you will have a hard time every finding a rod or gong clock whose sound you like better. Few of these clocks were made. This clock was probably made in the mid 1910’s period. Not sure what model this is yet. You be the judge at to the clock’s age and the model number before acquiring. Nice solid wood mahogany case on this clock. No cracks, repairs or splits to the case. The finish to the case does show some finish wear from time. See nothing on the inside of the case or the outside to show that it was ever refinished at any time. The 8 day brass clock and chime movements appear to be in good condition. The three wind springs feel sound when keyed. The appropriate pendulum bob is with the clock has an embossed image on it. The chimes unit is a number 90B. The time/strike unit is a number 89O. The brass plates of the time and chimes’ units show some loss of finish from oiling and time over the years. Each of the bells, is about 2.75 in diameter, and all sound great when the clock strikes and chimes. The hour strike bell is slightly larger. None of the bells have any cracks or other damage that would impede their sound. The clock was made to chime every 15 minutes and then chimes, and strikes the number of hours on the hour. The chimes unit is to the Westminster chime sound. Not striking, and chiming as expected when should activate, will strike and chime when manually activated. The brass plate is in place to lift the strike hammers when you wish to silence the clock. The nest of bells look good, other than needing a good cleaning and are securely attached to the case. The face of the clock does show some moderate wear to the silver colored finish. Says “Sonora Chime” and “Made by Seth Thomas” in USA on the face. The face appears to be made of tin and has black colored numbers. Beautiful gold colored trim ring around the face. The face and bezel are loose from the case and the left side of the bezel moves down when door opened making wind arbors not lining up with holes. The clock hands match and look appropriate to the clock. The wood door is in place, and the beveled glass is there as well. No cracks or blistering to the glass. The rear door of the clock is still in place as is the latch that holds it in place. The clock comes with the 4 brass feet. There is no representation that the clock is in original condition, or will continue to be in working order. The clock will come with a winding key. The clock stands 14-1/8″ tall, by 10″ across, by 7 wide. The clock face is 5-3/8 across. This was definitely a quality clock made around 100 years ago. If you have not had experience with old mechanical clocks before, I would suggest you steer clear. One really needs to have the patience, and skill to work with these great works of art. They are not our modern plug in and go, or change the battery clocks. The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well.
