We built many honey hives over my childhood and young adult years. I never really liked taking honey from the beehives but this was necessary in. More so in communist times. I started reading articles about the decline in all types of bees throughout the world; this brought me with the pushing of friends to make natural beehives which are not harvested for honey. The more natural the hive the more chance the bees have to survive freely without human interaction, so that is where we are dozens of natural beehives later. Layens Beehive for Natural Beekeeping A Complete Assembled BeeHive Including 14 frames for Beginner to Expert Beekeepers. This is the Layens hive pioneered by Georges de Layens in the 1800s. This method of beekeeping has been around for hundreds of years and is for simple and easy beekeeping, You spend more time spent enjoying honey and less time fiddling around disturbing bees. If you live in the UK look for the Native European Dark bee (Apis Mellifera Mellifera) these bees are acclimatised to the British Isle. After purchasing your bees I recommend you follow natural beekeeping principles for enjoyable beekeeping. The Bee Hive (Layens Hive). 60 H x 50d. 64w x 50h x 44d. No building, No screws, No drills or working out where parts go. Just place the hive where you want it. If possible a South East facing hive is a good place to begin. Morning sun afternoon shade. Ensure its placed on a study level stand. Bees will draw comb down with gravity. If your hive is not level, bees may build comb that is not straight, called cross comb. Green stand in pictures is NOT included. Install your hive level or with a slight incline to the rear to allow excess rain water to run off the top. Pre-loaded with 14 frames. The hive comes preloaded with 14 wired Frames. The wires in the frames encourage the bees to draw straight comb in the frames. If you want an extra kick start in drawing straight comb then add a strip of beeswax to the top of the frame. This is a traditional Layens frame size of 36cm x 39cm. Frames sizes are in keeping with the traditional French size pioneered by Georges de Layens in the 1800s. Layens frames are deeper than the standard British National or Langstroth brood frames. The Layens frames were developed to resemble the natural environment of a tree hollow where bees live. By using the deep frame size the bees will easily be able to care for their brood and get to their food when hungry. In commercial beekeeping many colonies perish from starvation when using British National or Langstroth hives simply because they cant make the journey to their food stores up in the supers. These frames minimise starvation and lost hives. The frame size also aids the bee with pest and bug control, getting easy access to their food stores and keeping the hive warm during cold winters and cool during the summer. Enjoy beekeeping with this hive. Beekeeping is as easy as growing tomatoes and with this hive you will enjoy looking after your bees, watching them create comb and build a nest for their young. If you use Natural beekeeping methods with these hives then weekly checking is not required. Check on your bees two or three times per year. With this hive you have. No more heavy lifting of bee boxes. Less time spent on inspections. Easy honey collection and inspection = Less disturbance to the bees home. A more stable ecology and environment in the hive. Less time on Hive Inspections. If you follow Natural beekeeping. Then Inspections can be carried out at least twice a year not every week like commercial beekeeping. This is better for your bees and honey production. Inspect and clean at the beginning of spring and again in late summer. Its really is that simple. Frames are closed at the top so you will reduce the disturbance to the bees on inspection hence less stings and upsetting the bee colony. Collecting Honey is simple. When it comes to collecting honey this hive makes it easy. It can be done quickly by simply removing the excess honey frames on either side of the brood. Checking the hive in early spring and again in the late summer / early autumn at this time you would collect any excess honey. Secure Latch Strong latches to keep the lid secure on windy days. Close entrances for maintenance or moving the hive. Top entrance Secondary entrance can be opened to increase airflow or for bees to carry out cleansing flights during winter. Bottom main entrance The normal entrance of bees. Partial Mesh floor for debris & mite release The closed floor represents the closed bottom of the tree. But research has shown that having a partial mesh floor aids airflow and allows bees to dispatch debris and mites. I have 4 lovely original E H Taylor and Robert Lee dovetail jointed cedar wood bee hives that I found in a barn recently , they are all in good condition , im a cabinet maker so I have replaced / repaired any damage that needed doing on them.
